Meet a MHC | West Seattle Pastor: Clifford Low

Role at Mars Hill
Community Group Pastor of MHC. I oversee community groups for the West Seattle Campus.
Wife’s name
Hyun Ju (Scribble out the “y” and say it phonetically. Both names are her first name like Mary Kay.) My daughter Madeline will call her mommy, or Omma in Korean.
When did you become a Christian
I was born into a family of immigrant Chinese parents in pursuit of the American dream. We were cultural Christians who believed we were good people, but prioritized worldly success above all things. Like most Asian families this was also the number one priority for each of their children.
I was in elementary school when I was first introduced to Jesus at a neighborhood bible study. It was there where I understood the truth that I was a sinner, separated from a loving God and that Jesus died for my sins to save me. I chose Jesus as Savior but did not understand how to make Him Lord of my life.
Years later my passion for the American Dream helped me to achieve much in the world. I was consumed with work and selfish desires believing I was a good person. I blindly idolized what people thought of me, money, reputation and success. The problem is even though people looked at me as being successful I felt completely empty and insecure. Romans 8 talks about how if a man’s focus is on earthly gain he will find death but if a man focus on Christ he will find life. I was experiencing that truth.
In 1997 I was invited to another bible study. As I read the Bible for my first time I realized how much I had been deceived believing I was a good person. The light of scripture quickly revealed the hardness of my heart that had built up over the years. I realized that Jesus was calling for me to make Him Lord of my life. I decided to fully commit my life to Him that year, and praise be to God I have continued to grow in Him since then.
First set foot in MH
I chose to visit Mars Hill on my own in June 2004. I was looking for a culturally relevant church that was not over interpreting scripture and adding rules, yet holding to the truth of scripture as God breathed and inerrant. Hearing truth so clearly spoken was one of the major reasons I chose Mars Hill. I became convinced when I talked to a lady who had been deeply into drugs and prostitution before finding Jesus at Mars Hill. Her life had been completely transformed and she was so full of joy. I wanted to be part of a church that was missional about the marginalized.
Became an elder
December 2007
How did you end up in West Seattle
I was born in West Seattle but moved at an early age to the East Side, where I lived for most of my life. In 2006 I was asked to manage the community groups in West Seattle. At the time I was living in Bellevue but felt called to minister to the people in West Seattle. Moving into the neighborhood was a must, so I purchased a house in the Spring of 2006 and moved to West Seattle.

Hi Cliff,
Could you tell me in terms of groups the difference, if any, between Brian Ward’s (do not know who this is) Community Group and Fred and Dana Choi (I visited once) and planned on a visit tomorrow eve since the Community Group I have been involved with in Gig Harbor is not meeting.
Thanks.
