  • SERVE THE CITY | JULY 26
On Saturday, July 26th, we will scatter throughout the greater Seattle area to Serve the City. Each community group and ministry team will select a service project in their neighborhood, or with an established service organization, to carry out during the day. Sign-ups are in progress on The City. (See also the CAMPUS NOTES section, below)
  • VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL | July 28 – August 1
Our first annual VBS, for ages 3-10, is a free, fun, interactive week of activities that engage children while pointing them to Jesus. We’ll meet at EC Hughes Park from 11:30AM – 2:PM, Monday – Friday. Invite your friends! Contact westseattlekids@marshillchurch.org for more information.
  • EVERY TUESDAY IN AUGUST
    1. Aug. 5 | Summer BBQ Kick-off
Summer often begins a little late around here so the BBQ will too. The official MHC WS summer BBQ kick-off will take place at the WS campus building. Invite your friends, family and community to this summer party for BBQ, music, karaoke, and video games for the kids.
    2. Aug. 12 | Party In The Park
West Seattle + summer = Lincoln Park. Join the Party in the Park, 6:00 – 9:00 PM for an evening of great food, softball, kids games, music and more.
    3. Aug. 19 | Dinner & A Movie On California
MHC WS heads to “downtown” West Seattle for dinner and a movie! Get out with your friends, family and/or community group to support a West Seattle restaurant of your choice (e.g. along California Ave, Alaska or Admiral junctions, etc) and meet up with everyone at the Admiral Theatre later that evening for a private showing of a movie TBD via voting on The City. More details to come.
    4. Aug. 26 | West Seattle Beach Baptism
A West Seattle summer would not be complete without a beach baptism event on Alki. Join MHC WS, from 6:00-9:00 PM, on Alki Beach for a summer-ending BBQ party with baptisms. The evening will include food, a brief message, testimonies and baptisms. Do you want to get baptized? Email: erikh@marshillchurch.org

  •

  • WEST SEATTLE BIKE RODEO | Saturday, August 16
While kids don’t have bulls to lasso and wrangle in the city, they do have their bikes! This is the first annual West Seattle Bike Rodeo, for kids ages 3-10. It will be held at the EC Hughes North parking lot. While bike rodeos are designed to instruct and prevent accidents they are also lots of fun. This is a great opportunity to learn more about bike safety, participate in a variety of bike challenge courses and win prizes.
  • FALL SERVICE LAUNCH | Coming Soon
Beginning Sept 21st we will be launching our first evening service, 5:00 PM, in West Seattle. We are currently establishing a core group to help build and launch the service. Email westseattle@marshillchurch.org to express your interest.

SERVING:

Where can I get plugged in?

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24 ESV)

  • THE BREAKFAST CLUB is a great ministry to begin getting plugged into Mars Hill, or to expand your fellowship and service for Jesus. We meet at 9am each Saturday for a meal, time of fellowship and prayer and looking into God’s Word and our own hearts, and then team up to prepare the building for Sunday services. We also reach out into the community to check in with our neighbors and show them Jesus through community projects. E-mail ryanm@marshillchurch.org for more info, or just show up on Saturday!
  • THE PARKING TEAM is looking for volunteers to help with the new parking lots we have been given to steward. We need people to serve the neighborhood and the body by helping to park cars in the lot and not in front of the neighborhood houses. E-mail westseattle@marshillchurch.org to get connected.
  • THE YOUTH MINISTRY TEAM is looking for leaders who are passionate for Jesus and the youth of West Seattle. Please email westseattleyouth@marshillchurch.org if interested.
  • So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)

CAMPUS NOTES

WHY “SERVE THE CITY”

By Adam Sinnett, West Seattle Campus Pastor

Why “serve the city?” First, we are commanded to love our neighbor as our self (Mt 22:39). If we’re all honest, it is a confronting commandment because it quickly reveals the condition of our heart and should move us to action.

Second, our motivation to serve is found nowhere else but in the gospel. We love and sacrificially serve as we have been loved and sacrificially served by Jesus Christ. This includes loving and serving our enemies, because even while we were enemies Christ died for us (Rom 5:8). The only true and lasting motivation for serving and loving others is experiencing the love and grace of God, through Jesus Christ, made available to us in the gospel. If we truly know, believe and grasp that we are sinners saved by grace alone, apart from anything that we have done, we will live lives that pour out grace and generosity to those around us.

Third, serving is the gospel in action and we are called to be doers, not hearers only (James 1:22). Often there are felt needs all around us, that if met, can serve as gospel bridges for the words of the gospel to travel across into the lives of those that have yet to meet Jesus.

Will you join me in prayer for this event and the city of Seattle? Serving and loving the city goes far beyond a single day of service, but it starts with one.

Mars Hill Church West Seattle lives for Jesus as a city within the city of Seattle: knowing culture, loving people, and seeing lives transformed to live for Jesus. The Centrality of the Cross in Counseling | Redemption

We said last week that the atonement doctrines of ransom and redemption are interlinked. This week I will cover redemption. So what is redemption? Deliverance upon payment of ransom. What is the deliverance? Freedom from sin. What is the payment of ransom? His blood.
