West Seattle | Men’s Morning Prayer – 9.24.08

This week 17 men from West Seattle gathered to pray in Jesus’ name. After sharing the various conversations we had this week with unbelievers, Pastor Cliff also encouraged us to seek out people that we do not know on Sundays, especially those that appear to be new to our church. This is all part of having a missional heart, and not wanting anyone to fall through the cracks. Going forward we will begin to share those specific conversations at the beginning of our time each week.

This week we took a look at Col 3: 5-7 (below):

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.”

Pastor Cliff then talked about how we are called to kill sin, as it is our ultimate hindrance to seeking things that are above (see Colossians 3:1-4 from last week). If we do not proactively seek to kill sin by the power of Jesus Christ, sin will automatically seek to kill us. As a result, our perspective should be that we will not allow anything in our life to have a greater value than Jesus Christ.

Pastor Cliff then posed these application questions for us to consider through the week:

Questions:

  • What struggles are you allowing to still have power in your life?

  • What specific steps can you take to kill or yield no power to those struggles?

  • What struggles have you not shared in community?

  • How can prayer be used to mortify your struggles in life?

Prayers this week:

  • Pray for Unity and Humility with Leadership and the Staff. Pray that all efforts are done through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Continue to pray for the Song of Solomon series. Pray that all believers will seek to pursue their primary identity in Christ, that marriages will be strengthened, and that those yet to be married will pursue relationships that are honoring to Jesus.

  • Give thanks for the 1000+ people that attended West Seattle last Sunday, including the 235 people that came to the 5pm service launch. Pray that we continue to grow throughout the coming weeks, and that God would draw many new people, especially unbelievers.

  • Give thanks for the first midweek “Equip” trainings on Tuesday. Pray that the Holy Spirit would be leading the instructors of each of the classes.

  • Pray for the Apprentice training of potential community group leaders that starts this weekend.

  • Pray against Satan, his tricks, and divisive attempts to hamper the mission of Mars Hill and lead people astray from the truth of the gospel.

The Centrality of the Cross in Counseling | Redemption

We said last week that the atonement doctrines of ransom and redemption are interlinked. This week I will cover redemption. So what is redemption? Deliverance upon payment of ransom. What is the deliverance? Freedom from sin. What is the payment of ransom? His blood.
